We’re delighted to share with you a guest blog on Skin Cancer by Andrew James Dermatology.

Andrew will be joining SO Podiatry weekly from June 2023.

Skin cancer accounts for 50% of all cancers worldwide. Everyone knows someone who has or has had skin cancer.

For men, the rate of skin cancer has increased by over 200% in the last 30 years. In women, it is over 75%.

There are lots of people walking around totally unaware that they have skin cancer. I see this every day in my work. See my testimonial that Richard has kindly provided. This is an example of several things occurring at once. It is a perfect example of what I see daily and why mole mapping and skin lesion is so important.

Firstly, Richard had been responsible and had been checked for skin cancer by a dermatologist just 8 months before I saw him where he was given the ‘all clear’. When I saw him, I noticed the suspicious lesion on his face straight away. It was not a lone lesion but was hiding amongst several benign skin lesions. Skin cancers can so easily blend in, to the untrained eye.

Secondly, I wonder if this was ‘missed’ by the previous dermatologist. Or had it changed in those 8 months? Richard admits he had been ‘lulled into a false sense of security’. He was blissfully unaware he had skin cancer. He was shocked when I told him.

Thirdly, the skin is the body’s largest organ and is continually evolving. That’s why it is important to get new moles or new skin lesions checked and then rechecked if you notice they are growing, changing in shape, colour, thickness and so forth.

Fourthly, Richard is in his 70s, and people over 50 years of age are more likely to present with skin cancer than those under 50 years of age.

And finally, skin which is older and more ‘worn’ as in those over 50’s is more susceptible to developing skin cancer because the skin’s integrity is less robust than younger skin.

What are the risk factors for skin cancer?

Risk factors for skin cancers include:

  • Age
  • Time in the sun
  • Intense sun exposure in childhood
  • Living in parts of the world closer to the equator
  • Skin type (pale skin burns and damages more than darker skin)
  • Family history of skin cancer
  • Previous skin cancers

Medical treatments such as immunosuppression increase the risk of cancers as does organ transplantation.

These are the main risk factors. Do you fit in here?

My passion is to identify skin cancers early on so people can get prompt appropriate treatment because early detection means less invasive and less disfiguring treatment, less pain and can even save lives.

That’s why I offer a skin lesion identification service and a full body mole mapping service (full body mole mapping is not routinely available on the NHS).

I am not aware of any other mole mapping service in Worcester, other than in Private Hospitals.

I also have clinics in Evesham, Alcester, Inkberrow, Chipping Norton and Banbury.
